Long-term porta potty rental: cost savings and contract terms
Long-term rentals (30+ days) are the workhorse of the porta potty industry. Construction sites, agricultural operations, seasonal facilities, and disaster relief deployments all run on monthly contracts. The economics are significantly better than week-to-week rentals.
How monthly pricing works
Standard month-to-month contracts run 20-35% cheaper per week than short-term rentals. A unit that costs $150/week on a 1-week rental might be $90-110/week on a 3-month contract. For multi-unit orders, that discount stacks - 10 units on a 6-month contract can run 40% below short-term rates.
Most providers offer three contract structures: month-to-month (most flexible, slightly higher rate), fixed 3-6 month term (better pricing, early termination usually penalty-free or pro-rated), and fixed 12-month term (best pricing, sometimes includes free quarterly deep cleans).
What's included in monthly service
Weekly cleaning is the baseline. Service visit includes: full tank pump, interior wash and disinfection, urinal and toilet seat disinfection, toilet paper restocking (typically 2-4 rolls per unit), hand sanitizer refill, deodorizer replacement, and a quick exterior wipe.
For sites with heavy use (50+ workers per unit), you'll want twice-weekly service. The cost is roughly 1.5x weekly service, not 2x, since the trip costs less per visit when you're already on the route.
Adding or removing units mid-contract
This is where solid providers earn their keep. Your project size changes - crews scale up for a phase, scale down for finish work, you add a new site. Most monthly contracts allow you to add units within 24-48 hours and remove them with a few days notice. Some providers charge a small mobilization fee, others include it in the contract.
If your project moves locations, free relocation within the service area is standard. Outside the service area, expect a delivery fee for the move.
When long-term makes sense
The math is straightforward: if you need a porta potty for more than 21 days, monthly pricing beats weekly. Construction jobs of any meaningful size are almost always monthly. Agricultural operations during planting and harvest run 2-4 month rentals. Seasonal facilities (Christmas tree lots, summer camps, farmers markets) book 3-6 month terms.
For uncertain project timelines, month-to-month with a flexible exit is usually the right call. The slight rate premium versus a fixed term is worth the optionality.
